DUBAI: For Saudi artist Raghad Al-Ahmad, the chance to incorporate her roots and identity into the fabric of the famed apparel company Adidas was a dream come true. 

Al-Ahmad has collaborated with Adidas on their first capsule collection tailored for the Saudi market, in celebration of the Kingdom’s upcoming National Day on Sept. 23. 

The collection — called “Bloom Sky” — features the usual crop of functional unisex pieces including pants, shorts, sweaters, jackets, hoodies and t-shirts.

In addition, it has women’s modest-wear pieces including abayas and hijabs, all with a distinct Al-Ahmad touch. 

“I believe we need to respect and integrate cultural elements into our collection. By including modest wear, we can connect with individuals who value this aspect of their culture, creating a complete experience,” Al-Ahmad tells Arab News. 

“As a designer who wears abayas daily and strives to be modest through layering and matching, I understand the importance of these elements. Adding them to our collection will have a significant impact, allowing us to craft something that truly resonates with the culture we are embracing.”

The name of the collection is inspired by a poem by Makkah Governor Prince Khaled Al-Faisal. The first sentence of the Arabic poem translates to: “The sky is pink and my desert is blooming.” 

“As an Arab, I’ve grown up in a culture where poetry is a significant form of expression. I remember my grandmother always reading poems she had written, and my mother, who loved collecting poetry books,” Al-Ahmad says. “I am particularly inspired by Prince Khaled’s poetry and his vivid descriptions of the natural world around him.” 

The collection, which depicts iconography symbolizing flowers and stars, is an ode to all things Saudi and Al-Ahmad took inspiration from her everyday surroundings.

“My dad, an adventurer, retired from flight maintenance and began exploring Saudi Arabia in his motorhome. He opened a gateway to the country’s wonderful nature, camping amid the desert’s beauty,” the Jeddah-born artist explains. 

“He introduced me to the captivating Saudi lavender flowers, showing his happiness surrounded by them in the desert. We found inspiration in the contrast between the sand’s color and the vibrant lavender.” 

Al-Ahmad is a multi-disciplinary experimental artist who likes to work in mediums including collage, installation, sculpture and digital films 

This isn’t Al-Ahmad’s first partnership with an international brand. For example, in 2021 she collaborated with French luxury label Jean Paul Gaultier to create playing cards that represent and celebrate the Kingdom’s culture on the occasion of Saudi National Day. 

The “Bloom Sky” collection is part of Adidas’ efforts to collaborate with and promote artists from the region. 

In recent years, the company has forged strategic partnerships across the region with governing bodies, sporting organizations, teams, and clubs, with a focus on promoting women's participation in sports and improving access to athletic opportunities. 

“I was amazed by the Adidas team’s curiosity and their ability to adopt my culture in many ways, translating it into a product that everyone appreciates,” Al-Ahmad says. “The team paid attention to every detail, and for that, I am deeply grateful. Special thanks to each member … for bringing an innovative approach to my culture.”

JERSUSALEM: A Hamas spokesman on Monday accused Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement with the group, including targeting Palestinians in Gaza with airstrikes, and said that next Saturday’s hostage release would be delayed.
A Hamas spokesperson said Monday that the group will delay the next hostage release after accusing Israel of violating ceasefire agreement.
Israel and Hamas are in the midst of a six-week ceasefire during which Hamas is releasing dozens of the hostages captured in its Oct. 7, 2023, attack in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
The sides have carried out five swaps since the ceasefire went into effect last month, freeing 21 hostages and over 730 prisoners. The next exchange was scheduled for Saturday, releasing three Israeli hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
Abu Obeida, the spokesperson for Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, accused Israel on Monday of systematically violating the ceasefire agreement over the past three weeks, and said Saturday’s release would be delayed.
“The resistance leadership has closely monitored the enemy’s violations and its failure to uphold the terms of the agreement,” Abu Ubaida said.
“This includes delays in allowing displaced Palestinians to return to northern Gaza, targeting them with airstrikes and gunfire across various areas of the Strip, and failing to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid as agreed.”

RIYADH: Consumers have an appetite for fashion items produced in a circular economy model, an executive said on Monday at a Riyadh conference.

“When it comes specifically to the fashion industry, we all know that we contribute to 10 percent of CO2 emissions, and (it) is the second-largest consumer of water,” Florence Bulte, chief sustainability officer at Chalhoub Group, said during a panel discussion at the World ESG Summit.

“We have been looking for a solution to change this aspect,” Bulte added.

She highlighted how the company realized that there was “an appetite” among consumers for green fashion.

One example Bulte noted is second-hand luxury items which are repaired before being resold — recycling materials and lowering costs while appealing to the demand for high-quality goods.

The conference highlighted how many businesses are working to switch from traditional to circular economy models.

This approach is presented as a sustainable alternative to the linear economy, which mainly focuses on taking, making and disposing.

In a linear model, resources are extracted, used and discarded, leading to an unsustainable depletion of natural resources and increased waste, whereas a circular economy focuses on designing products and systems that minimize waste, promote resource efficiency and extend the life cycle of materials.

This approach not only addresses environmental challenges, but also opens new avenues for economic growth and innovation.

As the Kingdom continues to promote sustainable development, the World Environment, Social and Governance Summit in Riyadh highlighted various ESG topics and investment opportunities.

During the event, one of the panel discussions focused on the transition to the circular economy and some of the strategies used by companies.

Among the panelists was SAWACO Water Group CEO Nizar Kammourie, who discussed how the company maintains sustainable practices in private water utility, including by launching AI in its water digitalization initiative.

“The purpose of this AI implementation is to have productive maintenance in place, so we know exactly what needs to be repaired before emergency shutdown,” said Kammourie.

The initiative reduced power consumption and maintenance costs, he added, preserving water resources and minimizing waste.

“So, less carbon emissions and more water,” Kammourie said.

JEDDAH: Drivers will compete on a revised version of the record-breaking Jeddah Corniche Circuit in a double-header weekend when the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship comes to Saudi Arabia this weekend.

After six successful seasons in Diriyah, the all-electric racing series will now compete on a specially adapted layout of the circuit, the fastest in the world, as the championship moves to Jeddah for the first time on Feb. 14-15. 

The newly modified three kilometer track will have 19 corners, offering a new challenge for drivers and teams as they navigate high-speed turns along the Red Sea coastline.

The Jeddah E-Prix’s circuit layout has been tailored exclusively for Formula E, featuring four new chicanes placed to enhance overtaking and show off the agility of the electric vehicles.

The track diverges from the traditional Formula 1 route just before Turn 4, before rejoining at the Turn 21/22 section. Two additional chicane complexes have been installed between Turns 25 and 26, leading into the final corner and on to the pit straight.

These modifications were completed in just 30 days, with a dedicated 120-member team working around the clock to transform the circuit.

“Delivering a brand-new track layout at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in just 30 days was an immense challenge, but one that our dedicated team of 120 track specialists tackled with incredible skill and determination,” said Angus Miller, senior track and overlay manager at Formula E.

Samer Issa-El-Khoury, managing partner of CBX, the promoter of the Jeddah E-Prix, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the project.

“Thanks to the joint efforts of CBX, the Ministry of Sport, the Saudi Automobile & Motorcycle Federation, and Formula E, we have adapted the Jeddah Corniche Circuit to create a track that will deliver thrilling electric racing for fans and drivers alike,” he said.

Formula E will also introduce Pit Boost, an innovative mid-race feature, at Jeddah’s opening race.

This new strategy element grants drivers a 10 percent energy increase (3.85kWh) via a 30-second, 600kW ultra-fast energy boost in the pitlane. The feature is designed to shake up race tactics.

Saudi Arabia is a key destination on the championship’s calendar, and the move to Jeddah aligns with its Vision 2030 strategy to develop world-class sporting events throughout the Kingdom.

LONDON: Israeli forces demolished on Monday a house, two living units, and two agricultural greenhouses in the Palestinian area of Masafer Yatta, located south of Hebron, which faces eviction orders.

Israeli personnel raided Maghayir Al-Abeed, a hamlet in Masafer Yatta, and demolished two agricultural rooms belonging to Fayez Ibrahim Makhamra and Osama Fayez Makhamra, the Wafa news agency reported.

They also uprooted 10 trees and destroyed crops.

In Jinba village, Israeli authorities demolished two living units belonging to Ibrahim Ahmed Younis Mohammed and uprooted plants and fruit trees.

The house of Issa Ahmed Isa Mohammed was demolished by Israeli forces, who also damaged approximately 1,000 square meters of mosquito fern nurseries, which serve as feed for roosters and chickens.

Masafer Yatta consists of nearly 15 Palestinian hamlets located in the southern occupied West Bank. Israeli forces regularly invade the area in an effort to evict its population of 1,150 residents, half of whom are children. Since the 1980s, the area has been designated a military zone by Israel.
